Description:The Bell Public House was a magnificently designed building. It stood on the junction of Bristol Street and Great Colmore Street - exactly where the Etap Hotel stands today. The road running behind the pub is the end of Bell Barn Road, which was subsequently redeveloped as Rickman Drive. That redevelopment saw wholesale changes to the urban landscape around this area, which is why there is little behind The Bell in this photograph. Visible in the distance are the Y Block flats on Great Colmore Street. The picture is undated but is probably from the nineteen fifties. The 1939 Trade Directory on this website reveals that the licensee that year was one Florence Puddepha. Next door on the left are the premises of the Bocker And Bettridge School of Dancing. Further on next to them is Dennis's Furniture Mart who were a popular local furniture dealer.
